Everything is (not) a Sacher cake Part I

2023
Raw steel and objects

Everything is (not) a Sacher Cake draws on the long-standing tradition of Sachertorte making in  Austria, with a particular focus on its symbolic connection to Vienna and its cultural heritage. The name itself is inspired by the internet trend where objects are revealed to be cakes, playing on the idea that everything could, in fact, be a cake.

In this context, the phrase’s inherent antagonism challenges the conventional understanding of Sachertorte. Here, it becomes something unexpected: a cake not made of flour and chocolate, but of raw steel - an object that defies its familiar form.

Everything is  (not) a Sacher cake Part III

rusted steel

The use of steel underscores the contrast between the cake’s rich, edible nature and the cold, industrial, and decaying properties of metal, suggesting complications in consumption and a transformation, referencing to the Linz Steel Manufacturer voestalpine Stahlwelt, that accounts for Austria’s largest share of emissions.

Oghormi or Ode to Holy Restaraunt Musicians

2023
carrara marble

Armenians have a rich tradition of stonemasonry, a skill passed down through centuries. One shining testament to this mastery is the Geghard Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Armenia. Carved into the adjacent mountain, it stands as a massive monument to the enduring strength of worship, even in the face of challenging political climates for almost a millennium.
In my recent artistic exploration, I delved into a theme that has captured my attention - Armenian restaurant music, specifically the urban folk-pop genre known as rabiz. Drawing inspiration from the unique subculture surrounding this music, where singers and performers are revered almost like holy figures yet face disdain from other social groups, I sought to pay tribute to their importance.
I carved a microphone and a keyboard from a single piece of white marble, shaped like a rock. This sculpture serves as a homage to the musicians, elevating them through the enduring artistry of stonemasonry and emphasizing the profound role of music in our culture.

The series of squeezed Armenian juices from Noyan brand depict the nostalgia and daydreaming for the lost land, offering a sip from the Ararat valley. Squeezed and used in one’s hand, they represent the consumption of that sentiment and the repeated action and continuity of the series hints on its past, present and future actuality: the never-ending struggle and blessing.

The pieces challenge symbolism as part of national identity, with Ararat mountain being the most depicted of all Armenian symbols. Nowadays on the territory of Turkey, it is yet observed vividly from many parts of Armenia close to the border, warming the hearts of Armenians.

Painters of all times and guilds have always depicted Ararat in its diverse beauty. I am, though, just making a miserable attempt of reproducing the image from the juice packaging, over and over again, and it never turns out the same. Through this, I also acknowledge my own identity and feel affinity with artists of Armenian origin.
